Aspen X-Games Week Accommodations for Luxury Rental Guests
Book early for X Games week—three compressed days that empty Aspen's luxury rental inventory fast.

X Games week puts Aspen’s luxury accommodation under its most compressed pressure. A full stay should be planned around the event’s three-day core. The 2026 schedule shows how tickets, transport and where guests stay fit together, while the 2027 dates give guests dates to book around.
What X Games Aspen actually is — three compressed days of elite sport layered over a full festival
X Games Aspen 2026 marked the 25th consecutive year at Buttermilk Mountain. The event ran January 23–25. Within those three days, access split between free daytime programming and ticketed evening competitions and concerts. X Games set the free-access cutoff at 4PM. That boundary matters more to a guest’s daily plan than the loose idea of an “X Games weekend.”
The sport and music share the schedule. Saturday’s competition moved from Men's Ski Slopestyle through Big Air and Knuckle Huck to Men's Snowboard SuperPipe. Sunday combined slopestyle, Knuckle Huck, Big Air and Snowmobile Speed & Style before Men's Ski SuperPipe. A guest arriving only for the headliner concert would therefore be choosing a different experience from someone spending the afternoon and evening at Buttermilk.
On Friday, guests could see TESSLA for free during the day and Disco Lines with a ticket in the evening. Saturday’s free performers included Elliot Sloan, Kendoll and Girlfriends, with Alesso headlining at night. Aspen Snowmass describes the base area as a place for elite competition, live music, VIP experiences and time with athletes.
Why X Games week creates Aspen's most compressed accommodation crunch
Spectators, athletes and event groups need space around the same short window, while Aspen has a constrained supply of luxury properties. The squeeze is especially tight for larger suites and multi-bedroom homes because the groups that need them cannot fit into a smaller room. The shortage takes shape months before arrival. By the time the event feels close, the places that best fit a group’s needs may already be booked.
The City of Aspen has capped Classic STR permits at fewer than it allowed before across its capped residential zone districts. Large whole homes make up only a small part of permitted inventory, and that part is contracting. November 2025 regulatory amendments require platform listings to display valid permit numbers and make platforms responsible for removing non-compliant listings. Informal overflow is therefore not a dependable answer to the squeeze.
A hotel suite can still be the right choice for a guest who wants to avoid arranging staffing, transfers and extra rental nights. But guests book hotels for the same short stretch, so a stay with less to arrange can still be hard to find. A well-managed private home answers a different need by giving families and groups space without shared hotel areas. Neither category escapes the shortage. The group benefits from choosing the trade-off that suits it before availability makes that decision for it.
Ticketing tiers and how they map onto a three-day stay
The four ticket tiers in 2026 differed in how much shelter guests had, where they could watch and what hospitality was included. With General Admission, guests could stand to watch evening competitions and headliner concerts and take part in X Fest activations. With Silver Lounge, guests also had a heated lounge and more access during some evening sessions. Gold Lounge offered a dedicated hospitality setting and priority viewing for evening competitions and concerts. Chalet Lounge, offered through On Location, provided private premium hospitality with hosted food and beverage and reserved viewing for groups and corporate hosting.
The practical choice starts with the evenings a group wants to attend, then moves to the level of access. Saturday carried the strongest pressure on premium tickets, with Men's Snowboard Big Air and Men's Snowboard SuperPipe leading into Alesso. Friday paired Women's Snowboard SuperPipe, Women's Ski SuperPipe and Men's Ski Big Air with Disco Lines. It was a substantial evening in its own right, though Saturday was the more likely early sellout for Chalet and Gold Lounge inventory. That makes Saturday the first evening to settle when weighing limited hospitality options.
Sunday offered a different rhythm because it had no nighttime concert. Guests could watch daytime competition for free and leave in the early evening, but they still needed tickets for later competitions. In 2026, guests who chose Chalet Lounge on Friday and Saturday and free daytime access on Sunday had a high level of access while keeping one evening free. Tickets went on sale in late autumn through the official X Games website and Front Gate Tickets. That 2026 pattern explains the planning logic, but it does not establish 2027 ticket tiers or sale dates.
Getting to and from Buttermilk without losing an hour each way
There is no public parking at Buttermilk during X Games. For each visit, guests need to plan how to get there and back, whether by bus, taxi or private car. Aspen Snowmass identifies free RFTA service from Rubey Park Transit Center in downtown Aspen, Brush Creek Park & Ride and Snowmass Village during event hours. Event parking at Brush Creek Park & Ride connects to a free shuttle directly to Buttermilk.
Spectators leaving together put pressure on the exit after evening programming. Rideshare and taxi pickups use designated areas off Owl Creek Road and East Buttermilk Road near the main entrance. Those fixed pickup locations do not remove unpredictable waits or surge pricing after evening finals. A pre-booked private car reduces the scramble to find a ride, although it does not make the surrounding traffic disappear. The purchase is as much about time and certainty as comfort.
Location changes how much coordination that purchase requires. Downtown Aspen and places along Highway 82 are on the main RFTA corridor, while guests on Red Mountain rely more on transfers. Snowmass Village has direct event bus service, but a stay there still requires travel between the accommodation and Buttermilk. Guests holding Friday and Saturday evening tickets should build their transport around those departures. A daytime-only visit presents a different problem from staying through a late concert, so one transport plan need not govern the whole stay.
How luxury accommodation options in Aspen actually differ during X Games week
The central choice is between concentrated hotel service and the space of a private home. The Little Nell sits at the base of Aspen Mountain and offers fireplaces in every room, ski valets and a substantial wine cellar. The St. Regis Aspen Resort offers Remède Spa, a nightly champagne sabering ritual and a heated outdoor pool. Guests do not have to assemble the household arrangements that can come with a rental.
For a larger party, however, hotel convenience has a spatial limit. Rooms suit smaller groups, while peak-priced suites may approach a private home’s nightly cost without providing comparable gathering space. A rental gives the group a kitchen, ski storage and a shared base for the days around the event. Those features matter when some guests want to ski while others head to Buttermilk. The choice is not which category is more luxurious in the abstract, but which one supports the group’s routine.
Rentals downtown and in West End and East End make it easier to reach dining, après and the bus corridor. Red Mountain has views from high up and more privacy, but guests rely more on transfers and pay premium rates. A vetted marketplace can help filter out non-compliant inventory, but permit compliance remains a basic requirement. The budget also needs room for service fees, staff gratuities, Colorado lodging tax and any desired chef-on-demand or ski-tech services. The nightly rate alone does not describe the cost of the stay.
Why the minimum-stay requirement turns a three-day event into a full-week commitment
A Friday-through-Sunday event does not necessarily produce a Friday-through-Sunday rental. Aspen’s luxury properties often require guests to book several nights during peak season, so the stay they pay for may be longer than the competition lasts. X Games falls outside Christmas–New Year's and usually has a multi-night minimum stay that is shorter than the longest holiday minimums. The full week is a more useful planning unit than the event’s three days, although not every property requires exactly a week.
Arrival time can absorb the practical work of settling into a house before the busiest programming begins. Days outside the event can hold skiing, dining and time together without competing with an evening ticket. Aspen Snowmass describes the wider setting as a “full winter playground.”
For groups, the economics also depend on the whole stay. Sharing a home across several guests and multiple nights can compare favorably with booking hotel suites. The common rooms and kitchen then serve a purpose throughout the week. This is the strongest case for a private rental. Its value comes from using the space and time the booking provides, rather than judging both against a three-day admission schedule.
Building the week around the event — what to do before and after the three competition days
The competition days should anchor the itinerary, with the quieter days built around them. Arriving on Thursday gives guests time to learn their way around the property, drop off gear and stock up on groceries before Friday’s events. Thursday dinner reservations are also easier to secure than Friday or Saturday tables. In 2026, an earlier arrival opened another option. Harris Hall hosted Monster’s live-scored ski film “Ornada” by Armada Skis on January 21, featuring Phil Casabon, Tanner Hall and Sammy Carlson among its X Games Gold Medalists, so that screening required arrival before Thursday.
During the event, mornings can remain ski time. Aspen Mountain (Ajax), Aspen Highlands and Snowmass stay fully open during X Games and are often less crowded as spectators gather at Buttermilk. An early-afternoon move to the venue then leaves room for free music, festival programming and athlete interaction before ticketed access begins. Guests staying for an evening session can continue into the competitions and concert covered by their pass. The return journey should match that finish.
Monday provides a different payoff as the event crowd thins and lift lines return to normal. It gives the group room to ski without fitting the day around a Buttermilk session. For mixed-ability groups, Aspen Snowmass also offers the Buttermilk Deluxe private lesson program, a discounted experience for up to five people with a dedicated Pro. There can be time for dining and après around those plans without packing the rest of the day. A coherent week leaves space for the pre-event calm, the competition and the quieter days afterward.
When to book and what to secure first
Accommodation comes first because it has the longest practical lead time. For a late-January event, spring or early summer is the useful window for securing a multi-bedroom home or hotel suite. At that stage, decide together how many guests will come, where to stay and what minimum stay to book. Those decisions shape the property’s suitability as a full-week base and its transport needs. Early-week and Thursday dining reservations should also be addressed with accommodation rather than deferred to the busiest part of the planning cycle.
Tickets come next when sales open, with the preferred evenings and hospitality level already decided. The 2026 schedule shows why that choice should precede detailed daily planning, but its performers and ticket arrangements should not be carried forward as a 2027 promise. Private transport can be booked once the group has chosen its evenings. It can be arranged closer to the event than the house, but Friday and Saturday departures should not be left until the week of arrival. That sequence protects the scarce space first, then secures access and the means to get home.
X Games identifies Aspen 2027 as the 26th consecutive year at Buttermilk Mountain and the first event of the new X Games League season. The dates to build around are January 29–31, 2027.
